ON JANUARY 2ND, THE FIRST SHOW OF 2005 - CHILLED OUT!

And how was your Christmas? Warm, fuzzy and messy, I hope. But if you or your loved ones were anywhere near the tsunami, I pray that you are all safe.

Our first Midnight Sex Talk of the year will be a selection of favourite clips from our shows so far, with an extremely low key and mellow commentary by us. No stripping this time! Kim's away for the weekend, and we reckoned most of you will be relaxing after seeing in the New Year, so we hope you'll forgive us for not being there in person to take your calls and emails. Later we'll be editing this show and putting it on the Resonance archive.

Looking ahead, we've got all sorts of topics coming up in 2005. Among them - pain and pleasure; sex magick; dating; sex toys; parents and children; sex and technology... And if you're doing anything you'd like us to cover, drop us a line and we'll take a look.

CHRISTMAS SHOW ROUNDUP - THE YEAR IN SEX

Man, there was almost too much to talk about.

Blunkett (& Mrs Quim), Boris (& Petsy), Beckham (& Rebecca) and Rooney (& the hooker grannies), and not forgetting Sven (& whoever it was).

Janet Jackson's wardrobe error, Paris Hilton, Abi Titmuss, Michael Jackson, Belle de Jour and the Sex Inspectors.

Bush, gay marriage and this year's Biggest Slab Of Officially Sanctioned Porno - Abu Ghraib.

(I could put links to all these, but in this case, Google Is Your Friend. Hope I haven't besmirched the spirit of blogging, folks.)

We also had some good commentary from Ros Taylor, editor of The Wrap, the Guardian's daily news digest.

Annie reminded us of the time she sold dark blue silk undies to Blunkett, and Don cast a scornful eye over the world of reality TV. Google "sex scandal" and the word 'church' comes up depressingly often, but we barely touched on that - there was so much else to talk about. Our final thought was that whatever goes on between two (or three or more) people, bringing a child into the equation changes everything. We will be returning to this topic in a forthcoming show.

And Blunkett's just resigned. Dismal story all round. We're sure to be covering fertility power games in the near future, mark my words. If that's not 'edge play', I don't know what is.

HERPES VACCINE TRIAL (UK) - VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Please take a minute to read this. It's not very festive, but it's important.

A gynaecologist of my acquaintance, with a special interest in herpes research, has asked me to put the word out about a new herpes vaccine trial. It's a UK-wide project, and they're looking for girls aged 16-17. If you know anyone who might be interested, please send them to the link below. I've knocked up a rough & ready page, with the text of the original leaflet, a list of phone numbers of clinics around the country, and the names of people to speak to.

The more work that gets done on this, the nearer we'll be to a cure for this currently incurable nasty. You should read about some of the crazy cures being peddled on the internet. I'm amazed somebody out there's not flogging tincture of monkey gland extract, or titanium nose flutes. In fact they probably are...

SHOW ROUNDUP - SEX, BOOZE & SPIKING

...or, The Unholy Trinity Of Brits, Alcohol And Shagging That Continues To Amuse And Appal The Rest Of The World In Equal Measure. Maybe not all that equal, actually. The UK press is full of detailed laments about the current state of British drunkeness, and justifiable objections to the changes in our licensing laws that are currently being discussed.

But it's no good: we all know that if pubs get to open way into the night, we aren't suddenly going to turn into a nation of slow, contemplative drinkers, nibbling tapas and making a carafe of wine last three hours, Mediterranean-style. Give a repressed Brit a skinful, and he or she will piss, shit, puke, spit or ejaculate in all directions. Oh, and fight, so you can add 'bleed everywhere' to the mix. The amount of vomit that miraculously appears on our streets each morning is simply going to increase. You should have seen the pile of it outside Westminster Abbey (eh?!) the other night. And the amount of unsafe sex, and accompanying STIs, is just going to rise and rise and rise.

Blimey, that looked like turning into a rant! On a lighter note, given the current season, we talked about the ubiquitous Office Party, and shared some of our own experiences. (Heh.) We looked at drugs too, taken intentionally and not. What kind of loser spikes somebody's drink so they can have sex with them? Answer - more of them than you'd think.

All this said, we had a great show. Our guest on Midnight Sex Talk this week was singer songwriter Marianne Hyatt, who has been described as 'Patsy Kline stealing from Finley Quaye', and she's a brilliant performer all round, I can tell you. As well as casting a Texan eye over our [cough!] sorry, pissed-up sex lives, she shared her own spiking story. A big thank-you to Marianne for coming on and telling us about it.
